Professor Ray Furniss on 'Wagner and the Dance'.

Ray Furniss recalls that Wagner called himself the 'best dancer in Saxony'. This may, as he says, be beyond proof, but the role of dance in his work surely bears closer examination.

Ray Furniss first experienced a Wagner opera in 1953 when he heard Siegfried under Knappertsbusch. He was appointed to the chair in German at St Andrews in 1984, which he held until 1999.  His book Wagner and Literature was published by Manchester University Press in 1982, and Professor Furniss has continued to write on associated topics.
