The fully-staged operas at the 2001 Festival were Scottish Opera's new Walküre and a Magic Flute staging imported from Aix-en-Provence. In addition, there was an astonishing range of concert performances - Runnicles and The Trojans, Mackerras conducting Idomeneo and Boulez with Bluebeard's Castle, not to mention Rossini (Armida), Rameau (Zoroastre), Messiaen (St François d'Assise) and a few more. Among these riches, it may have been inevitable that the British premiere of a piece only three years old might seem a bit lost. Never mind, it is a fascinating work, full of interesting ideas and effects, not just the obviously male sisters. The eclectic composer was one of the two conductors needed for its complex presentation. Oleg Riabets and Gary Boyce were carried over the original Lyon cast.
