Read more about the opera Merrie England

Merrie England was given a major revival after some years out of the repertoire. Both music and libretto seem to have been highly thought of, and the work was, as in 1902, well received in Edinburgh. The most interesting feature of the cast was the presence of Joseph Hislop, approaching the end of his singing career, in the role of Sir Walter Raleigh. Nancy Fraser was the daughter of Agnes Fraser, who had created the role of Bessie - and also became Mrs Joseph Hislop.

Cast details are as reviewed in The Scotsman for 12 March 1935.
