This was the last time that Sadler’s Wells Opera toured to Scotland with a mixed repertoire. This production by John Copley, which had opened at the London Coliseum on 10 March 1971, was visually very attractive, with one of the most effective designs by Lazaridis in "traditional" mode. It was certainly a great improvement on the venerable staging brought from Berlin to the 1971 Festival. The two performances featured, on different nights, two of the best comic basses in the business in Michael Langdon and Richard Van Allan. Did anyone go to the show twice just to see them?
The schedule for the fortnight was:
Week commencing 24 April: Mon Cav & Pag; Tue Seraglio; Wed Carmen; Thu Duke Bluebeard's Castle & Oedipus Rex; Fri Cav & Pag; Sat Twilight of the Gods.
Week commencing 1 May: Mon Carmen; Tue Duke Bluebeard & Oedipus; Wed Cav & Pag; Thu Seraglio; Fri Carmen; Sat Twilight.
