Gunther Rennert's new production of Ballo had opened in London on 23 October 1952, and would be revived regularly for the next twenty years. The English translation was new, and the original Swedish setting was used - very unusual at that time. The principal singers had all sung their parts in London, and with the exception of Wasserthal had been in the first night cast. Only Edith Coates and the conductor were entirely new.
Cast as advertised, with the exception that Elfriede Wasserthal, who had visited Edinburgh with the Hamburg company the previous summer, was replaced at the last minute by Joan Sutherland.
