Even Covent Garden found it tempting to perform a popular favourite to end the visit on the Saturday night.
In these early post-war years the Covemt Garden company had not yet switched to singing in the original language - a policy that began around this time (led perhaps by the arrival of Maria Callas and Ebe Stignani to sing Norma in London). Hilde Zadek sang several parts in English with the company.
The Empire Theatre in Edinburgh became unavailable for opera for most of the rest of the century, until converted at long last as the modern Edinburgh Festival Theatre.
