A rare opportunity to see one of Sir Peter Hall’s opera stagings in Scotland. Glyndebourne’s touring cast was also top-notch, with beautiful expressive conducting by Edward Gardner and a wonderfully seedy Don Magnifico from Luciano Di Pasquale, who had sung the part in the main Festival, but only came back for these last two performances of the tour. Tuva Semmingsen also only sang the two Edinburgh performances, but was a beautifully natural Cinderella. It was hard to believe that her predecessors, either on tour or in Sussex, could have been any better. She was well matched by the young tenor Matthew Beale. Andrew Foster-Williams was a deeply serious Alidoro, who despatched his, very grand, aria effortlessly.
