Ponchielli's memorably melodic masterpiece remains a rarity in Scotland. Its only professional staging, in 1903, was by the Carl Rosa company. Since then it has been left to the more enterprising amateur groups in the cities. Glasgow Grand first did it in 1931, then again here, in 1970. More recently it was staged in Dundee by Tayside Opera. It is such a fun piece, bursting with melody, even if the plot is luridly dramatic. Audiences are missing out.
During this week in 1970, it was paired with three performances of Die Fledermaus, on the evenings of April 7, 9 and 11.
Cast details to be confirmed.
