Julietta represents just what other British companies should be bringing to Scotland - a modern classic that Scottish Opera would not be staging themselves.
David Pountney had mounted a number of works from the Czech repertoire during his Scottish years and had continued this practice at ENO. But Julietta had thus far escaped him - the haunting ENO staging had been directed by Anthony Besch. The Slovak production brought to Edinburgh in 1990 had been less interesting than that, so it was good to have a second opportunity to assess the work, in a revival of the 1997 production with the same cast returning.
