The Ellen Kent touring company had been visiting the central belt for several seasons, and here ventured further north. Dundee had not seen a full-scale performance of a Puccini opera since the old Gaumont Theatre had lost its stage in 1961, just after the last Sadler's Wells visit (including a Tosca with Victoria Elliott, Charles Craig and Peter Glossop). Here, the simple stage facilities in the Caird Hall worked fine when only one set was required, and the vast hall's wonderful acoustic suited the Puccini soundworld ideally.
The soprano Mariana Colpos was an ideally moving Cio-Cio-San, sadly not to return. The conductor, tenor and baritone would become familiar, and welcome, visitors for the next decade and more.
