Donizetti's gentle comic masterpiece was not well known at this time, though La Scala had brought a well-received production to Covent Garden in 1950. This was a welcome revival by the Italian company that toured Britain every year under the management of Eugene Iskoldoff. They were to be commended for their enterprise. They also brought Massenet's Manon in addition to the inevitable Trovatore, Traviata and Bohème.
When L'elisir returned three years later it was an altogether diifferent event, and the opera's reputation was transformed - but that was La Scala at the Festival with Giuseppe de Stefano as Nemorino. And the others weren't half bad ertither.
