On a rare visit to Manchester, Scottish Opera divided their time between the Opera House (for Macbeth and The Merry Widow) and the Northern College, for Pountney's intimate Magic Flute and a single performance of Turn of the Screw. This, and the follow-up in York, were essentially a warm-up for the nezt foreign tour, where Screw and Rape of Lucretia, both in memorable stagings by Anthony Besch and John Stoddart, were introduced to Polish audiences, with appearances in Lodz and Warsaw.
