The University of Aberdeen Opera Society made the unusual choice of Janáček's Cunning Little Vixen for its annual production. This year, the atmospheric Elphinstone Hall hosted the performances, and very well it worked too.
Those attending heard a thoroughly enjoyable performance of this classic work. The young singers struggled at times to project their words against the orchestra, some fifteen or so strong. In what was fundamentally a team performance it seems a shame to pick out individuals, but Anna Lawrence as the Vixen and Jenni Halliday as the Fox performed effectively together. The conductor (Lucy Hole) and director (Jason Leonard) deserve credit for this brave choice, and the quality of the performances. The stage crew worked hard to change the set, and props.
The audience may well have been of a normal size, but to this reviewer, paying his first visit, these young performers were deserving of greater support.
