Elijah was still going through a lull in its popularity, often considered to be a rather ponderous Victorian warhorse. However this was a lively, chamber-style rendering, giving a foretaste of how the work's fortunes would revive as the authenticity movement took off. Stephen Richardson was very young to be singing the elderly prophet, but showed off a beautifully schooled voice and had no difficulty in dominating proceedings.
