Bartered Bride 1944Sadler's Wells Opera

Read more about the opera Bartered Bride

This visit to Edinburgh by Sadler's Wells lasted for two weeks, starting on 13 November, and having matinees on Wednesdays as well as Saturdays.

The mounting of a new staging of The Bartered Bride seems to have been in some ways a political gesture, with management keen to show solidarity with the occupied Czechoslovak nation. The programme contained two messages to back this up. Firstly: 'The Management wishes to acknowledge with gratitude the assistance given to this production by the Czrchoslovak Government in London' The second note read:'To-day, when Czechoslovakia is again under foreign domination,we hope that British audiences will welcome this production, both for the brilliant qualities of the opera, and as a tribute to the nation it represents.'

Cast details are from a programme in Edinburgh City Library.
