Apparently a one-off, this was a brief Edinburgh visit by students from the Benjamin Britten International Opera School of the Royal College of Music. The work of the director John Copley has rarely been seen in Scotland, and his long connection with the work, particularly as an assistant at the time of the premiere, gave this staging a special value.
Conductor Michael Rosewell was unknown in Scotland, a situation that soon changed as his long connection with the Perth Festival through English Touring Opera, began shortly afterwards.
A significant number of these young singers went on to develop not just useful, but outstanding, careers.
