A promising cast on paper at the time (and with the benefit of hindsight an astonishingly good one). It didn’t quite work. The director took an encouragingly serious view of the opera (disliked by the many people who still seem to regard it as a trivial piece). Sadly, this was at odds with the designs, largely in pastel shades (predominantly pink and avocado), with fiddly pot-plants dotted around the stage - altogether too lightweight for the serious emotions on display. The singers were wonderful, and the conducting wasn’t half bad either.
