By far the most famous opera composer of his day, his best known works Barber of Seville, Cinderella and William Tell are still programmed regularly at the world's major opera houses, and the overture to The Silken Ladder is a mainstay of the modern concert repertoire.
All the comic essentials are here - secret trysts (aided and abetted by the ladder of the title), unwanted match-making, misplaced affections and expectations, and a bumbling servant trying his hardest to help, but making everything worse.
