Martha had received its final full-scale professional performances in Scotland a few seasons earlier, thanks to Sadler's Wells, but it seems to have lost popularity, at least with the critics. They seem to have decided that charm, naivety and simple melody were not enough. The under-rehearsed, scrappy playing of the SNO clearly didn't help. Perhaps the second work in the week, Verdi's Macbeth, provided the red meat that was now required.
