It is perhaps surprising that Gypsy Love is the sole work by Lehár, indeed the only Viennese operetta, to be tackled by Dundee Operatic in its twenty-five or so years of existence to this point. Perhaps odder still, in the absence of The Merry Widow, is the fact that Gipsy Love had been done once before, in 1929. It now played in rep with a popular pair of serious operas, Cav & Pag, which the company was also having a second look at.
The English version concocted for its first London season in 1912 by Basil Hood and Adrian Ross, remained in use, despite the wholesale changes it made to plot and characters.
