On what would be the last visit by Sadler’s Wells Opera to Edinburgh, they brought two performances of their new production of Twilight of the Gods to attract people who had been unable to get in to either of the Glasgow performances given by Scottish Opera the previous December. The production had opened at the London Coliseum on 29 January 1971, and was the only element of the Ring to go on national tour before the whole cycle was performed in mid-1973. Rita Hunter, Alberto Remedios and Clifford Grant were all in majestic form. The original announcement had Alexander Gibson named as conductor, providing a further link with the Scottish Opera production, but that idea was dropped before the tour got under way.
The schedule for the fortnight was:
Week commencing 24 April: Mon Cav & Pag; Tue Seraglio; Wed Carmen; Thu Duke Bluebeard's Castle & Oedipus Rex; Fri Cav & Pag; Sat Twilight of the Gods.
Week commencing 1 May: Mon Carmen; Tue Duke Bluebeard & Oedipus; Wed Cav & Pag; Thu Seraglio; Fri Carmen; Sat Twilight.
Cast details are from a programme in the OperaScotland collection.
