Read more about the opera Twilight of the Gods

The ENO Ring had been in the repertoire since the beginning of the decade, with the first London cycles played during the summer of 1973. Several more had been given on tour in 1975 and a further batch in 1976. While Twilight of the Gods had appeared on its own in Edinburgh during the 1972 tour, this was the only complete cycle they gave in Scotland. Indeed this was the last visit to Scotland by ENO, which was about to stop touring altogether.

Charles Mackerras took a brisker view of the work than Reginald Goodall, who had built up the production. Several of the singers remained from the original, most notably the incomparable Rita Hunter and Alberto Remedios. Anne Collins got this final evening off to an excellent start. Katie Clarke was already singing Brünnhilde on the continent, and Elizabeth Connell would later do the same.
