A celebration in words and music – introduction by Dr Claudia Rossignoli (St Andrews) followed by student performances of arias by Handel, Vivaldi, Haydn and songs from Shakespeare's plays, inspired by Ariosto's Orlando Furioso.

2016 is the five hundredth anniversary of the first appearance of the great Italian epic, Orlando Furioso by Arisoto. Dr Jane Pettegree introduced Dr Rossignoli (Department of Italian) who spoke to this epic work, which has inspired many playwrights, opera composers, poets and novelists since it first appeared.

Vocal students from the university then performed opera arias by Vivaldi, Haydn and Handel, as well as songs from Shakespeare plays which incorporated and transformed episodes from the original work.

The vocal students of Ian Darling, were:Jonathan McNaul, Sebastian Robson, Seoniad Eadie, Imogen Welch, Grace Card and Niall Kennedy. The accompanist was Walter Blair.

An appreciative audience attended.
