The Dresden Years Friday 16th to Monday 19th September 2016
Tutor: Derek Watson B.Mus. LRAM
In our last study course The Young Wagner in September 2015, Derek Watson told the story of Wagner's early life as far as his first great success: Rienzi, premiered in Dresden in October 1842.
In September 2016, Derek will continue the story by surveying Wagner's career in the years he was Royal Kapellmeister at Dresden. Der fliegende Holländer (which he had composed in Paris) was first seen in Dresden in 1843, followed by Tannhäuser in 1845. He completed Lohengrin in 1848.
These three 'romantic operas' will be the main musical focus of the weekend, together with his other writings, occasional pieces and his performing version of Gluck's Iphigenie in Aulis.
Wagner's busy life as conductor in Dresden and his growing involvement with revolutionary politics, leading to his flight from the city after the failed uprising of 1849, will also be considered.
This will be a residential course held in the pleasant and comfortable surroundings of Gartmore House. The course will start with dinner at 6pm followed by the first teaching session. There will be free time until 4pm after lunch each day and we will disperse after breakfast on Monday 19th September 2016. On the Sunday evening, we will watch short film extracts from Holländer, Tannhäuser and Lohengrin.
A detailed programme and information about reading material, etc and travel information will be sent out nearer the time but we expect that the usual pick up from Stirling station will be available if required.
