Recently appointed Music Director of ENO, Paul Daniel was a welcome visitor to Scotland, not generally known for his operatic work here. The same could be said of the soloists, with Louise Winter a regular performer of Mahler's concert pieces, and Gwynne Howell only associated with major choral works.
Duke Bluebeard's Castle was now gaining acceptance in Scotland, and in these performances was interestingly preceded by one of the more rugged Sibelius symphonies, no 4 in A minor.
