Taking place three years after the end of The Barber of Seville in which Count Almaviva (with the help of his former valet Figaro) manages to win the affections of Rosina, rescuing her from her guardian (and rival to the Count for her affections), Doctor Bartolo. The opera is set in the castle of the Count Almaviva and his wife, Countess Rosina. The Countess mourns her husband's loss of desire for her as the Count seeks to reinstate his feudal right to sleep with any female in his charge on her wedding night before her new husband. It is clear that he intends to enact this prior to the wedding of his wife's chambermaid, Susanna, to Figaro. Thereafter follows a series of complex plots in which each character attempts to hoodwink the others and gain the upper hand. Ultimately, The Count is caught out in his deviousness and begs the Countess to forgive him.
