This fascinating double bill of near-contenporary music dramas, Erwartung and Duke Bluebeard's Castle, had a tremendous success at home in Canada. The Toronto opera house was packed for works generally seen as difficult. The transfer to the Festival - the Canadians' first visit - was thoroughly justified. The famous director Robert Lepage was having his first attempt at opera, a success story that would lead twenty years later to the Ring at the New York Met. Victor Braun, a Canadian who spent most of his career in Germany, was a hugely welcome visitor, on his only trip to the Festival. The two sopranos may have been less widely known, but they were both excellent singing actors.
