Alcina has not been performed in Scotland anything like as often as it deserves. Perhaps this staging by the experienced William Relton was seen as an antidote to the controversial one that had appeared at the Edinburgh Festival a couple of years before. In any event, Christian Curnyn was already showing himself to be an expert baroque stylist. Clearly the Academy had a superb team of sopranos at this time, with two alternating in the title role as well as a third singing Morgana.
