The 1990 Turandot was a larger show than usual due to it being supported as part of Glasgow's year as European Capital of Culture. It was clearly a hard act to follow, and a repertoire work like the perennial pairing of Cav & Pag was an obviously popular follow-up. The lead Canio, Alexander Morrison, worked for many years with Scottish Opera, and had actually performed Canio in a medium-scale tour a few years earlier - the only professional performance of the double bill since Sadler's Wells days.
