The Perth Festival had enjoyed a success in 1992 with its staging in St John's Kirk of Curlew River, the first of Britten's gripping Parables for Church Performance. Perhaps it was surprising that the follow-up took so long, but here it was at last, with The Prodigal Son still to come. The Burning Fiery Furnace is in some ways the most attractive of the three, with its astonishing variety of sounds from the percussion section, and its bright, almost garishly decadent designs. Surprising then, that this was its first Scottish appearance since its Edinburgh Festival premiere thirty years before.
