Fife Opera have, from time to time, taken a risk with box office by staging a rare work, which has, for reasons unknown, slipped from the repertoire. Far more than just a rightly famous overture, clearly Merry Wives has been supplanted by Verdi's Falstaff, composed half a century later. But that is most unfair, as Nicolai's masterpiece is a delightful frolic, bursting with melody, and deserving of regular revivals.
Indeed it came up fresh as paint in 2013 when given by the students at the Conservatoire in Glasgow - perfect repertoire for such young voices. But this performance in Kirkcaldy also provided a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
