Maria Stuarda, unknown for well over a century after its composition, has, in recent decades, become almost as popular as Donizetti's second 'Scottish' opera, his tragic masterpiece Lucia di Lammermoor. This may be because of its association in many houses, especially the New York Met, with the other 'Tudor Ring' works - Anna Bolena and Roberto Devereux. The second act finale, as the two queens have a (fictitious) slanging match is highly dramatic, while the final act, with its succession of arias leading to the execution, can be very moving.
