Twenty years after the fabulous National Theatre staging had visited Edinburgh, this production from the Donmar Warehouse was on a far more intimate scale - perhaps comparable to the Edinburgh Lyceum production of 1981. Nevertheless it was still hugely enjoyable, proving Guys and Dolls to be definitely one of the great musicals.
A three week Glasgow run was justification for this season to be tagged as 'Scotland's Broadway' with several touring musicals in the pipeline - though none of them was as good a show as Guys and Dolls.
There was a good-sized band - fourteen players - under the excellent Musical Director, James Dunsmore, using an orchestration by Doug Besterman. The original Donmar staging by Michael Grandage had been carefully adjusted by Jamie Lloyd to project properly in the larger proscenium -style auditorium.
