A work now acknowledged to be one of the greatest of all musicals seems to have taken an inordinately long time to have reached Scotland - six years after its London opening. But this was a time when lots of the old touring theatres were closing and being demolished, while touring big shows like My Fair Lady was becoming prohibitively expensive. Even the Alhambra itself, a wonderful building, would not survive for more than a few more years.
This staging was a spectacular reproduction of the original Broadway and London event, including Cecil Beaton's famous costumes. The Ascot Gavotte achieved instant fame as a result of his extravagant sartorial confections.
This Glasgow season opened on Monday, 4 May, with matinees on Wednesday and Saturday. Further dates to be added.
