Read more about the opera My Fair Lady

The original production of My Fair Lady had been taken on a commercial tour back in 1964.  Since then, it had been professionally mounted only by Scottish Opera, in receipt of public subsidy.  Here was another of our national companies having a go.  The National Theatre had toured its famous production of Guys and Dolls twenty years previously, so it was long overdue to bring another one to Scotland.

Trevor Nunn was one of the greatest British directors, whether with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, or Glyndebourne.  But very little of his work had travelled north, so this was doubly welcome.  The leading names were Christopher Cazenove and Stephen Moore as Higgins and Pickering.

How nice also to see a rare live performance by Hannah Gordon.  Having been a star student in Glasgow at the RSAMD, she had been rewarded with a season at Dundee Rep (including a memorable Ophelia).  Since then an Edinburgh Festival production of Schiller's Mary Stuart directed by Frank Dunlop was one of a handful of appearances in Scotland.
