This was an excellent example of the kind of traditional recital given by star Spanish singers of the day. British audiences had seen similar programmes delivered by Conchita Supervia before the war, and since then Victoria de Los Angeles had also become a popular star.
The second half of the afternoon was always devoted to twentieth century Spanish songs - though Berganza did not dress up in traditional Spanish costume, as Supervia used to do. This was a lovely, warming way to spend a Winter Sunday afternoon.
The programme was as follows:
Monteverdi: Addio Roma (L'incoronazione di Poppea).
VivaldI: Piango, gemo, sospiro.
A Scarlatti: Three songs.
Elitropio d'amor.
Se delito e l'adorarti.
Chi vuole innamorarsi.
Pergolesi: Confusa, smarrita (Catone in Utica).
Rossini: Anzoleta avanti la refata.
Donizetti: La zingara.
Granados: 15 Tonadillas al estilo antiguo
1 El tra la la y el punteado.
2 La maja dolorosa.
3 El majo timido.
Guridi: Seis canciones castellanas
1 Llamale con el panuelo.
2 No quiero tus quellanas.
3 Como quiere que adivine.
Montsalvatge: Cinco Canciones Negras
2 Punto de habanera.
4 Cancion de cuna para dormir a un negrito.
5 Canto negro.
Falla: Siete Canciones popolares espanolas
