This was Cavaliere Castellano's first visit to Scotland. Two weeks in Glasgow included several unusual works by Meyerbeer (Dinorah), Donizetti (La favorita as well as Lucia) and Verdi (Ernani). Norma was receiving its last performance in Scotland for nearly half a century, when the arrival of Callas at Covent Garden once again drew attention to this great work, which Glasgow Grand Operatic Society tackled in 1956.
All the Castellano performances were sung in Italian, including the three French works - familiar (Faust, Carmen) and less so (Dinorah).
The repertoire for the two weeks at Glasgow Grand was:
Week commencing 6 September: Mon 6 Traviata; Tue 7 Ernani; Wed 8 Lucia di Lammermoor; Thu 9 Rigoletto; Fri 10 Faust; Sat 11 m Barbiere di Siviglia; Sat 11 e Carmen.
Week commencing 13 September: Mon 13 Favorita; Tue 14 Cav & Pag; Wed 15 Dinorah; Thu 16 Norma; Fri 17 Barbiere di Siviglia; Sat 18 m Traviata; Sat 18 e Trovatore.
