Galli-Curci's Dundee Visit - Tomorrow's Concert in Caird Hall

'Music lovers in Dundee and district are looking forward keenly to the second of the series of Celebrity Concerts in the Caird Hall tomorrow evening. This concert is notable for the appearance of Madame Amelita Galli-Curci, one of the most famous sopranos of the day.

'Her remarkable career, as far as fame is concerned, really dates from 1918, when her formal operatic debut in New York created a success which has seldom been experienced in recent times. It was not until Madame Galli-Curci visited this country, and her English debut at the Royal Albert Hall was a memorable event.

'Her voice is acclaimed as one of the most remarkable soprano organs ever heard - wonderfully pure in quality and flexible in the extreme, as her fine gramophone recordings prove.  She is an accomplished pianist as well as a coloratura singer, who upholds the highest traditions of the bel canto school, and her unusually broad musicianship is reflected in her art.

'Madame Galli-Curci will sing a generous programme in Dundee. Mozart occupies a welcome place in the programme. Of this composer she will sing the lovely ''Das Veilchen'' and ''Un Moto di Gioja.''

'Some admirer has prevailed upon the prima-donna to sing the famous Shadow Song from Meyerbeer's Dinorah, for this is a request item. Another song which should delight her admirers is Bishop's ''Lo, Hear the Gentle Lark.''  The two last mentioned songs will have flute obbligato, played by Mr Raymond Williams.

'Among other songs Mme Galli-Curci will sing the Essex folk-song ''May Day Carol,'' ''Whither Runneth My Sweetheart,''(Bartlett 1605), ''Bolero - The Maids of Cadiz'' by Delibes, ''D'Une Prison'' (Reynaldo Hahn), and ''Garden Thoughts.''  The last mentioned is the work of Mr Homer Samuels, Mme Galli-Curci's husband and accompanist

'An interesting programme of pianoforte music will be played by Mr Gualtiero Volterra, the eminent pianst.  He will play sonatas by Scarlatti, studies by Chopin, and the grand-polonaise in A flat, and works of Liszt.'
