The Mahler Players continue their enterprising series of operatic concerts in the beautiful surroundings of Inverness Cathedral and Strathpeffer Pavilion. Musical Director Tomas Leakey has made an effective reduction of Wagner's huge score and has assembled a superb team of performers.
Anthony Negus has many years experience of rehearsing Wagner productions at the Royal Opera House and has conducted with Welsh National and in Australia.
Wagner has been central to the amazing career of Sir John Tomlinson ever since he sang as a student with the Scottish Opera Chorus in 1968. He has not worked nearly enough in Scotland during the intervening decades. Sadly he was not able to sing at the second performance, though well enough to speak an introduction. His substitute, Paul Carey Jones looks like being an important interpreter in the next few years. Like Lee Bisset, he sings in the Ring performances at Longborough next summer
This also provides a rare opportunity for Lee Bisset to sing a major role on home turf - and of course in Siegfried Brünnhilde only appears in the final act, so she sings the role complete from her awakening through to her killer duet with Siegfried.
Brad Cooper will be in Scotland to sing Apollo in Scottish Opera's Daphne the following week. He made an excellent impression earlier in the autumn in the first two performances, and here he has the great advantage of not having to sing the first two acts.
Only Roxanna Madylus is completely unknown in Scotland.
