Infedeltà delusa 2025Royal Conservatoire of Scotland

Read more about the opera Infedeltà delusa

This is one of Haydn's delightful but remarkably rarely played comedies, and made a perfect vehicle for a small cast of students well-versed in Mozartian techniques.  All five solo roles give the singers excellent opportunities to reveal their technical expertise, and it is useful to let us hear repertoire that is a definite change from the more common works.  Never mind, the next piece at the RCS will be The Magic Flute in March. At the last of the four performances the packed theatre, a delightfully intimate space, provided a thoroughly enjoyable evening.  It no doubt helped that many of the audience were students out to have a good time supporting their mates.

The work is beautifully orchestrated, and the pit band directed by Riley Court-Wood gave a thoroughly enjoyable account of the accompaniment.

Of the singers, Qi Liu revealed a creamy soprano equal to every challenge.  Haydn Cullen and Fraser Robinson both sang with great accomplishment and threw themselves into all the antics the director required of them. The other two did show occasional strain, but also created highly effective characters.

When a work is completely unknown it may sometimes seem desirable for a director to play it straight. That was certainly not done here, but the performers followed all the director's ideas with conviction.

Will we see more of Haydn's operatic output in future? Let's hope so.
