Euryanthe contains so much wonderful music that it is tragic that attempts to stage it have usually foundered because of the obscurities inherent in the libretto. This was a generally worthy attempt - at least it would have been difficult to recruit a better cast. And the Stuttgart ensemble brought Lohengrin, which is so heavily influenced by Euryanthe, to Edinburgh when they returned in 1966.
