After the initial worldwide success of Cavalleria Rusticana in 1890, there were innumerable attempts to find a suitable companion piece to complete the evening. Pagliacci was launched in 1892 and was almost immediately teamed with the earlier work. By 1909 it had become impossible to consider any other pairing. However, while these operas were rarely absent from the Carl Rosa line-up, 1909 is the only season when they were presented in Scotland by Moody-Manners.
Casts are as shown in programmes in Edinburgh and Aberdeen libraries and a review in the Dundee Advertiser.
