The Edinburgh Festival had a great success in 1965, with its first revival of a Haydn opera, Le pescatrici, which, surprisingly, disappeared without trace almost immediately. This was followed in 1967 with a staging of his London opera under the title Orfeo ed Euridice. This likewise failed to enter the repertoire in spite of containing a great deal of superb music. It has been rather a long gap until a third attempt - and that only in concert form.
it seems astonishing that René Jacobs had never appeared at the Festival either in his first career as a counter-tenor or in his second as a musicologist and conductor.
