The Traverse Theatre was established in 1963 as a club for new and experimental writing for the theatre. Originally located in the Lawnmarket, in 1969 it moved to larger premises in the Grassmarket.
In 1992, the Traverse relocated to its present site in Cambridge Street which incorporates two purpose-built performing spaces and where it stands almost shoulder to shoulder in a triangle with the Usher Hall on Lothian Road and the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Grindlay Street.
While The Traverse is known mainly for its drama, contemporary opera is occasionally presented there.
