The Queen’s Hall has a long and interesting history, originally as a Georgian church (1823-1976) and now as a vibrant concert hall (1979-today).
The Queen’s Hall, situated south of the City centre, is run as an independent charity. Its board is aware of the need further to upgrade the supporting facilities while fully maintaining the architectural character, excellence and appeal of the existing building. Fundraising and other plans are in hand to ‘radically improve the public spaces with more bars, bathrooms and circulation areas. There would also be a brand new 125 seat venue that would be suitable for smaller scale performances and also learning and participation work.’
However it has to be said that the building has huge appeal. With a seating capacity of 920, it has an intimate and attractive interior design with a good acoustic.
The Queen’s Hall presents a surprisingly wide range of activities including classical, jazz, blues, pop, rock, world, folk and comedy, but is best known for being the home base of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Accordingly the Queen’s Hall has hosted some concert performances of opera.
