Background
Bob was one of the last one-act curtain-raisers or after-pieces used by D'Oyly Carte to extend an evening. Only two of these maintained a foothald in the company's repertoire in later years, both with music by Sullivan. These were Cox and Box, with a text by Burnand, and the far more successful Trial By Jury, written by Gilbert. Trial had started life in 1875 as a curtain-raiser for an Offenbach piece, La Périchole, and such was the success of the G & S piece that the Offenbach has only quite recently been recognised in this country as a quality work in its own right.
