English director and designer.

Nigel Lowery trained in London at the Central School of Art and Design and was awarded an Arts Council bursary to work at Bristol Old Vic. He also designed productions at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Musica nel Chiostro (Mozart's L'oca del Cairo), and at Batignano, as well as for film and video.

With Scottish Opera he collaborated with director Richard Jones on a small-scale touring production of Macbeth, before designing Così fan tutte,  Das Rheingold and Die Walküre.

He later designed a complete Ring for Covent Garden as well as Il barbiere di Siviglia. For English National Opera he designed the world premieres of The Plumber's Gift (David Blake) and Blond Eckbert (Judith Weir) as well as Duke Bluebeard's Castle and Oedipus Rex. He designed Carmen for Opera North and The Gondoliers for D'Oyly Carte.

He worked as a designer throughout Europe, with notable productions in centres including Nice (Werther), Munich, Amsterdam, Brussels and for Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp.

As a director he has worked in Basle (Lohengrin, Idomeneo, Falstaff and Rameau's Les Paladins); at the Berlin Staatsoper (L'italiana in Algeri and Orlando paladino); with Vlaamse Opera (Candide and Rinaldo); in Stuttgart (Le nozze di Figaro); Saarbrücken (Dido and Aeneas) and Amsterdam (Platée).
