Virginia Kerr trained in Dublin at the Irish Academy of Music then in London at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Rudolf Piernay.

Roles with Scottish Opera include Jenufa, Salome, Helmwige, Donna Elvira and Julie The Jacobin. She created the triple role of Mother, Bride and Wife The Vanishing Bridegroom (Weir 1990), repeating it when Scottish Opera made its first visit to the Royal Opera House. Other UK appearances include City of Birmingham Youring Opera (Fiordiligi); Glyndebourne (Glasha Kátya Kabanová); Almeida Festival (Judith in McQueen's Line of Terror); Opera North (Grete Der ferne Klang); Opera Northern Ireland (Governess); Royal Opera (Ortlinde), Midland Arts Touring Opera (Governess).

Appearances with Dublin Grand include Léïla, Liù, Musetta, Micaëla and Elvira L'italiana in Algeri; Irish National Opera (Donna Anna, Countess Almaviva, Fiordiligi, Saffi The Gipsy Baron, Rosalinde, Hanna Glawari);   Valletta (Countess Almaviva); Leipzig (Anita Jonny spielt auf, Donna Elvira) and Nantes (Ortlinde). At Antwerp she created Fiona in Red Rubber (Dirk d'Haese).

Her extensive concert appearances included Nicola Lefanu's The Old Woman of Beare and Ian McQueen's Judith's Doubt and Resolve with the BBC SSO. She sang Carmina Burana with the RPO and BBC SSO as well as Mahler's 2nd Symphony in Mexico City. She recorded Gerard Victory's Ultima Rerum for Naxos.
