Arthur Jackson trained in Manchester at the RNCM before joining the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1967. During his years with them he sang many of the leading bass-baritone roles in the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire.
He moved to Scottish Opera in 1973, initially working with Opera for Schools. His debut as a company principal came at the 1974 Edinburgh Festival, as the Herald and Oracle in Gluck's Alceste. Other roles followed, including Christian Un ballo in maschera, Masetto Don Giovanni and the Servant and Doctor in Macbeth. At the 1975 Edinburgh Festival he created the roles of the Parson and Priest in Robin Orr's Hermiston. In Confessions of a Justified Sinner (Wilson) the following year, he created the part of Barnet.
