Scottish Opera's second Theatre Royal subscription season (1976-77) again consisted of ten varied operas. It opened with a revival of the successful Ebert staging of La bohème. This was followed by Confessions of a Justified Sinner (new in the summer), The Magic Flute, Don Pasquale, Macbeth, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, The Merry Widow, Fidelio, The Rape of Lucretia and Jenůfa.
The superbly imaginative yet simply staged midi-scale production by David Pountney had toured the length and breadth of the country since 1974, and continued its run with a brief showing at the Theatre Royal. Some long-standing members of the cast such as Robert Lloyd, Gordon Sandison and David Fieldsend remained, but new soloists included Yvonne Kenny and Robert Tear. The conductor Gary Bertini was a familiar face, a regular guest with Scottish Opera and more particularly with the SNO.
